More than half the time, guys interpret non-sexual visual cues from girls as sexual come-ons. And, they often interpret flirting signals from girls as just being friendly. A new study at the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Indiana University shows why: Guys are clueless.
On average, the study found that males had difficulty interpreting signals from women, so they often responded inappropriately. In fact, 70% of women reported instances in which a man mistook a friendly gesture for an invitation to sex.
The study was funded by the National Institutes for Mental Health and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. The latter funding source relates to both a decline in inhibitions and a decline in social skills that accompany alcohol consumption.
The study examined non-vebal communications in a group of 280 subjects, both male and female, with an average age of 20.
The subjects looked at photographs of women on a computer screen and categorized each as friendly, sexually interested, rejecting or sad. Whether any of the photographs had been Photoshop retouched to enhance their appearance was not immediately clear. Women were more accurate in interpreting the signals than men.
Surprisingly, the men often interpreted alluring, sexual signals from women as mere friendly gestures.
While some would say that the guys were "insensitive," it is actually as if they see the social world through blurry glasses.
The effect of human sexual pheromones, some of which have an aphrodisiac effect, on men's ability to distinguish sexual from non-sexual cues from women, was not investigated.
Not all men were insensitive to sexual clues; some were able to interpret them as well as the women. "Some men are very skilled at reading affective cues," explained the lead researcher. Whether this heightened social awareness is related to the men's sexual prowess, or even sexual preference, was not determined by the study.
