Choose the Right Puppy for Your Family
Purchasing a puppy for your family is a very big decision. It should never be approached casually, or lightly. A new pet becomes part of your family. You should do everything you can to educate yourself about the breed of puppy you are considering and its personality. You should also explore how much grooming or maintenance each new addition to your family requires.

It’s an old wives tale that an owner must wait until their new puppy is six months before beginning training. Training of a new pup should begin as soon as you bring home your new pet. This is especially true with Mastiff dogs. If you wait until your Mastiff is six months old he will be huge and well on his way to ruling the household.

In this article we will discuss some of the basic training that your Mastiff dog should be taught. You want a pet that is good mannered. Well trained dogs are a pleasure to be around.

House Training

Believe it or not, Mastiffs are quite easy to house train because they are smart, observant, and they are eager to please their owner. If they are taken outside to do their duty then they will get the idea within as little as three days. However, they are just puppies and so complete house training can take up to when the puppy is six months old. At this age they have more control over their bladder also.

You must be consistent with your house training. If you have a routine it is much easier for Mastiffs to learn. Take them out about the same times each day. Usually puppies need to go potty about 15-30 after they eat. This is one of the times you should be sure to take them out. A possible schedule to follow might be first thing in the morning, after each meal or after drinking water, after playtime, and before bedtime.

Another house training method that can be used is the crate method. Many Mastiff dog owners find this to quite successful. You can prevent accidents around the house by putting your Mastiff dog in his crate when you cannot supervise.

Leash Training

Always use a leash when walking your Mastiff. Sometimes this can be quite an experience. Your puppy will be curious as to its’ surroundings and so may tug rather hard and you may feel like your arm is being pulled out of its socket. For this reason, the first thing you want to teach your new pet is to not pull on the leash. It needs to be the first command of leash training because it won’t be long and your puppy will weigh as much if not more than you.

To help your dog get used to the leash you can let him wear it and drag it around the house. He will try to get rid of it at first but before long he will stop fighting it.

As you practice leash training by taking short walks each day, allow your Mastiff to explore its limits as to what is and is not allowed. Always praise your puppy when he walks nicely without pulling.

Training to Ride in the Car

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a dog that will ride nicely in the car? This would make trips to the vet much easier. Mastiffs generally enjoy riding in a car and will usually sit quietly and look out the window. Like most other training, this behavior is best learned at an early age. Short trips in the car might be helpful in training your Mastiff dog to ride well in the car. Again, praise him for good behavior in the car.

For maximum safety your dog should ride in a crate or be confined by a harness that is attached to a seat belt. Train you dog to wait until you give the command to jump in or out of the car. And never, never leave you Mastiff dog alone on the car. You put your pet at risk for overheating, even with the windows rolled down a bit. You also risk damage done to your car because your Mastiff gets bored. Mastiffs are also naturally territorial so they may bark and even try to bite passersby.

Mastiff dogs learn best when their owners or trainers are consistent, patient, loving, and willing to praise. They want nothing more than to please their owners. Since they crave attention they will show good behavior in order to gain attention and affection. Mastiffs are known for their loyalty. A well loved and trained Mastiff will be your best friend for life.
