Reporting Identity Fraud
Reporting Identity FraudIf you think you are a victim of identity fraud it is vitally important that you take immediate steps to begin repairing the damage that has been done. The damage may be more than you think it is, depending on the length of time that someone has had your identity and been using it.
9 Steps to Protect Yourself From Identity Fraud
This is truly the information age and the need to pass information is constantly growing. Internet shopping is expanding rapidly, as is the concept of online banking, credit cards and financial sites such as PayPal. With this increase in financial information being sent over the World Wide Web, it's really no wonder that we've also seen an increase in identity fraud and identity theft.
Popular Identity Theft Scams
Popular Identity Theft ScamsThere are many popular identity theft scams that are circulating, some have been around for decades while others are new to the scene. Some thieves will never stop trying to find a way to steal the one thing that is most important to you - your very identity. Each year, millions of people have their identities stolen in some way or are defrauded in some way.
Internet Safety - Protecting Yourself From Identity Fraud
There are many scams on the Internet, we know this already - we have all received spam emails in our inboxes and we delete them without further thought. What happens though when 'spam' is undetectable? What if you get an email from your bank or online bank that looks real and is asking for your information to be input on a website? Looks legitimate so you go ahead and do it - after all, they said your account would expire if you did not.
E-Bay - A Target For Identity Thieves
E-Bay is a popular website online that is used by millions of people around the world to sell and purchase new and used items. It is like a giant garage sale that you can access from anywhere in the world. However it seems that the bane of popular websites is that the more popular they become, the higher the likelihood scam artists are to attempt to defraud people at the website.
Don't Be Afraid to Ask Hard Questions about Your Identity
One of the hardest things we are faced with in our lives is asking hard questions of people. For many people, it simply isn't in their nature to be suspect of everyone, rather they are trusting and in some cases very naďve. This naivety can result in you being the victim of identity fraud - when it comes to your personal information, banking or financial information or credit information; you have to be unafraid in asking the 'hard' questions.
Buyers being victims of fraud is understandable, but sellers? Surprising though it sounds, that’s exactly what is happening on eBay. A common fraud is a bounced check. This has of course been happening for years in business. Buyers send you checks for the goods and then they bounce, leaving you high and dry. The best option is to not send the goods, till the check has been cleared. This way you’ll be sure of your payment. As most are now wiser to this particular piece of deception, people are resorting to newer and more ingenious ones.
There is a more difficult-to-detect fraud taking place on eBay now. A buyer asks for the goods to be shipped to an unconfirmed address. This address is different from the one registered at PayPal. You must note that PayPal accounts are notoriously easy to steal from, especially from new users. It only asks for an email address and password. PayPal does ask for a confirmed address now, which matches the one on the credit card. This is to prevent credit cards being registered on stolen accounts. But unscrupulous buyers ask for things to be shipped to a different address. This could just be the buyer resorting to credit card fraud. The goods are often delivered to the false address before the scam can be unearthed. Be wary of those who are willing to pay more and want a super fast delivery, because they could be scamming you.
Remember eBay frauds carried out by buyers are your responsibility. False payments are always refunded from you the seller, even if you have never received the money. Today there are many sellers and buyers who are moving away from PayPal, and using electronic payment services. Take a look at www.nopaypal.com for more information.
There is another kind of fraud happening on eBay. Buyers sometimes deny buying goods and state that they have been scammed. They ring up the bank that has issued their credit card and claim fraudulent use after receiving the goods. The bank without examining it further reverses the transaction so the buyer has the goods which weren’t paid for. Though this is risky, it is so easy to do! Beware of this kind of fraud and make sure that all your transactions are over eBay, so that a proper record is kept of them.
A few precautions and being alert to the possibility of being duped could make you be a little more careful about your sales transactions over eBay.
