I thought I would never get scammed because it only happens to other people. But then, I became a victim. I ordered furniture for my whole house via an online furniture company and the furniture never got delivered. It cost me $6,422.93. Their website disappeared; their phone number got disconnected; they simply vanished! Or, so I thought.

Before I go in depth into identity theft, let me explain to you what it means. According to Wikipedia, "identity theft is a catch-all term for crimes involving illegal usage of another individual's identity." The most common form of identity theft is credit card fraud. While the term is relatively new, the practice of stealing money or getting other benefits by pretending to be a different person is thousands of years old. Your identity usually in the form of your social security number and credit card numbers can be used on anything from an online shopping spree to opening a medical insurance policy. As everyday computer users we have become accustomed to not worrying when completing transactions over the Internet because there is no physically apparent danger from the screens of our computers.

Unfortunately I had to learn my lesson the hard way in the form of computer identity theft. I accidentally filled out a form that sent my credit card information to hackers instead of the merchant of the product I was trying to purchase. For protection from identity theft I no longer have to worry. To see how I protect my self from identity theft please go to http://www.idtheftauthority.com

Another form of identity theft is bank identity theft. Think about all of the tellers that you have given checks to. Whether they be in the form of deposits or withdrawals. These people view the balance of your account when any form of business is completed within the bank. Identity thieves target many bank tellers with tempting offers for the names and information of bank accounts. Can you realize the potential damage that you risk if just one of your checks falls into the hands of one of these shady bankers? This leaves you, your family, and loved ones wide open to the desires of the identity thieves.

Here's 3 Tips to Prevent Identity Theft:

1. We have developed the very common habit of just giving personal information away when it is asked for. If you someone prompts you for personal information such as your drivers license, social security numbers, bank account, and credit card numbers ask them what they need the information for or what do they intend on using the information for. So most important of all: Keep your personal information concealed.

2. Look for the "lock icon" in the bottom right corner of your screen. This certifies that the merchant you are purchasing a product from has taken the proper measures to install MCSSL, thus making sure that your credit card information is secure when sent over the world wide web to their servers.

3. Before purchasing from a website that you might consider an "iffy situation" check the Better Business Bureau Website. Also try searching google for (the name of the website + scam) This will most likely bring up complaints people have had with the merchant if any!
