Website Marketing Tips For 2008
2008 is nearly upon us and it is time to start thinking about our web promotion strategy for the coming year. With paid links all but wiped out it is now becoming harder to reach the top of the major search engines. This however should be seen as a positive as it means that the average man on the street who does not have a sack full of money is able to compete with the big boys.
Immitation is the Most Sincere Form of Flattery
If there is one rule that should be referred to as the refrain in SEO, it is this: To acheive a top position in a particular search engine, analyze what other high ranking Web pages have done. Search engines change their ranking algorithms from time to time. A page in your Web site that earned a top ranking last week might drop in the rankings a few months later.
You Can't Satisfy All the Engines All of the Time
The techniques that get you a high ranking in one search engine can get you penalized or even removed from the index of another search engine. This is because it's difficult to design a single page that will rank well for all of your chosen keywords in all engines, though a good informational page will sometimes rank well in more than one search engine.
As impressive as the Web's size is, it's far less important than its topology. Why? Because only by traversing its topology can we map the documents that compose it. The structure of the Web is one of the great mysteries of the Internet. Age: How are billions of Web pages connected to each other, and how does this impact your Web marketing strategy?
So, you may be thinking. "Well, who care about the structure of the Web? Leave that to the academics. I just want traffic!" Well, it's actually very important that you understand how the Web is being charted...your stake as a site owner couldn't be higher. Bear with me for a minute, and I'll explain why.
Researchers mapped traffic patterns through the Web and hypothesized a "bow tie" structure for the Web. In this "Bow Tie Theory," the central core, or knot of the bow tie, represents 30 percent of Web pages that are interconnected and easy to find by following Internet links. Another 24 percent represents one side of the bow,or "origination pages"...those pages with links that you can follow into the core but that cannot be accessed through links from the core. Yet another 24 percent (the other side of the bow) consists of "destination pages" that can be accessed from links in the connected core but do not link back to the core. The final 22 percent is completely disconnected from the core.
They found that if you picked two sites where a path existed between them, then you might connect with as many as 16 clicks. However, if you happened to click on a page that has both links into it as well as out of it (a connected site in the core). then the numbers of clicks between the sites would decrease to just seven.
The bottom line is: For your site to be visible to search engines, you must decrease the distance between it and other documents on the Web. If your site is not in the central core...and only 30 percent are...it is likely you don't have a high-traffic site, and it could be difficult for users to find it through links from others sites.
