Freedom of the press in Slovenia
In 2007, a group of ex-Communist journalist in Slovenia started a petition against the government of Janez Jansa accusing him of oppressing the free press and silencing irritating journalists. The group sent the petition all around Europe but they concealed its content to the Slovenian public until the scandal exploded before the Slovenian presidency of European Union.
The fact is that all the media in Slovenia are in hands of ex-Communists and that the government has not a single newspaper on its side or writing positive reviews in spite of exceptional economic growth.
The irony of the situation was clear when the new owners of Mag, the only journal that occasionally had something good to say about the government of Janez Jansa, changed its Chief Editors, and imposed a new antigovernment line of conduct to journalists. In this occasion, the group of journalist that wrote the freedom of the press petition applauded the owner’s decision, which makes a unique situation in Europe: The journalists can freely criticize the government but they cannot say anything positive about it because they can lose their job.
The freedom of the press problem in Slovenia is clearly a political playground and has nothing to do with what media write or not.
Drago Jancar, the most renowned modern Slovene writer said on this occasion that Jansa was a victim of unprecedented media lynching and that sensationalism is in full swing.
