Credit reference agency Equifax recorded a 45% increase in online credit checks in January and February.
In line with rising interest in keeping tabs on credit records, comparison site Moneysupermarket has issued a to do list to help consumers maintain a good credit score or improve on a fair or poor rating.
First of all, Moneysupermarket has advised consumers to check their record at least once a year and correct any errors by writing to the credit agency. It has also reminded consumers to register on the Electoral Roll and ensure any paid up County Court Judgements (CCJs) are listed as such. Lastly, consumers are advised to give careful consideration when applying for credit â€" multiple applications to several lenders within a short period will show up on your profile and may cause some lenders to refuse credit.
Tim Moss, head of debt at moneysupermarket.com, said: “People are really becoming aware of the importance of a good credit score.
“Credit agency Equifax has actually seen a 45% increase in people checking their profile in January and February, and moneysupermarket.com's SmartSearch facility has had a fourfold increase year on year.
“A fair or poor credit profile can make obtaining credit for everything from mobile phone contracts to mortgages much harder. Those that are accepted are likely to be offered a poorer rate.â€
