Debt figures released by Citizens Advice Bureaux in England and Wales saw mortgage arrears problems shoot up by 35% in the first two months of 2008, compared with the same period in 2007. Welsh town Merthyr Tydfilhas has recorded the biggest increase in house prices per square metre since 2002, according to Halifax Estate Agents. Halifax’s survey showed properties in the Welsh town increased by 203% over the past five years, from £439 in 2002, to £1331 per square metre in 2007.
