In a poll conducted by Halifax Home Insurance, two thirds of men admitted they only do DIY under pressure from their partners or due to a sense of duty. A survey by the insurer revealed 32% of men feel pressured by their partners to carry out DIY projects and 37% of men dislike DIY but feel duty-bound to do it.

While 49% of women believe DIY skills are desirable in a prospective partner, only 2% of men said they expected their partners to be able to undertake DIY tasks. But Halifax has warned homeowners to be careful about carrying out large DIY projects by themselves.

Of the 1,500 homeowners interviewed for the research, more than a quarter of men have attempted electrical wiring at home and 24% have attempted to fit an entire kitchen. But those who undertake such jobs themselves, without qualifications or experience, are at risk of invalidating their home insurance policies if things go wrong, according to Halifax.

Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax, said: “TV home makeover shows make it all appear so simple, and it's easy to forget that these are highly skilled professionals. In reality, trying to tackle certain areas you are not qualified for such as electrics or plumbing could invalidate your home insurance policy, leaving you liable for any subsequent damage. We'd recommend using a reputable tradesman rather than going it alone.”

Halifax also advised homeowners to check their home insurance policy details before embarking on a DIY project and consider extra cover for accidental damage.
